It is a late September evening in Milano. I’m at the Giardini Pubblici, a great park where I used to play as a child. Sitting on a green painted parch bench under a big tree, an old man suddenly approaches me and asks if he might read my hand. My feeling of taking part of an innocent game suddenly takes a disturbing turn. The unknown man sees more in my hand than I expected him to do.

Chiromantia is a collaboration with programmer Manlio F. Tartara lending its name from the art of foretelling the future through the study of the palm. Our aim with Chiromantia was to investigate the prophecies physical form through a computer animation of my left hand. What is the world hiding in the lines of my hand? Starting out with the chiromantic assumption that my body and the world outside reflects and are bound to each other, I’m concerned about the question to which extent my fate and my being could be predetermined in relation to my physical body.
